Chris Connery
Presenter and Trustee
Chris Connery is my professional name registered in the sixties, when broadcasting on TV and Radio It is easier to say than my real name which is the same as my late cousin, a famous author.
I first broadcast in the early fifties, in the Royal Air Force, as a hobby. After resigning my Commission, I worked in Canada and U.S.A. Hated New York, enjoyed Hollywood where I was in TV films. Then to Texas, did religious broadcasting and Country and Western music on local radio. Texans were so hospitable; to this day I miss their friendly and neighbourly nature. I was also a “Character Actor” in British rep.theatre and have done “voice–overs” for T.V. and radio commercials.
I came to Thornbury over forty two years ago, to work in TV, Radio and Media. Formed an Entertainments Agency, and Pro Photography enterprise. Recorded songs on budget albums. A season as Cruise Officer on the Med., toured Europe as a D.J. in clubs and on radio. Broadcast on “Radio West”, “Severn Sound” & “Brunel Radio”. I was the first film reviewer for the “Gazette”, with “Chris Connery at the Movies”, and “Performing Arts” reviews. I have the distinction of having written reviews for every paper published in the former Avon and Bristol area. Privileged to be a Life Member of the “National Union of Journalists”, photographed and interviewed many stars and celebrities.
I wrote comedy scripts for TV, mainly “The Grumbleweeds”, some “news drop ins” for “The Two Ronnies”, plus gags for many others. With a friend, I co-wrote produced and recorded a comedy radio show, like “Round the Horne”. I did most of the “character voices” .No station in the West would even listen to it, but it sold up North, that came as no surprise. Silly sense of humour, I see the funny side of things, unlike some people I meet who seem so serious, so I often get misunderstood.
This broadcast session I return to my usual morning slot, Monday to Friday from 09.00 – 11.00am with a familiar format of music of all types, guests chatting and some humour of course. A wide variety of topics covered in recorded and live interviews. Some folks have nicknamed me “Parkinson”, thank you! We have four things in common, we are both old, both Northerners, both accredited Journalists and both have a sense of humour, but sadly I don’t have his money.
I want to include as many local people as I can so if you have an event or interest to talk about, please Email the studio or ring if I am on air. You can drop in if you are passing and I’ll try to give you “talk time”. “PEOPLE & MUSIC” is all about you and the Community, not about me, you are all welcome.
On a personal level, I enjoy Thornbury and the nice green areas. I am a keen photographer and take pictures whenever and wherever I can. I attend Thornbury Baptist Church which I enjoy and where I meet some very nice people.
Thank you for listening and taking time to read this, I hope to hear from you when I am on air.
