Emma Garrett
I love radio!
My first memory of radio is ‘Listen with Mother’ on the old steam radio. Since then I’ve listened to many forms of radio from the old BBC Light Programme to commercial radio, Talk Sport and Five Live! In the early 60’s ‘popular’ music was only available on Radio Luxembourg. The Pirate stations were in full swing and I listened on my ‘tranny’. We went to see live bands then, discos only came later. Radio changed with the birth of Radio One in 1967. A later innovation in radio was the introduction of the BBC local radio stations in the 1970’s. One of the first was our own local, Radio Bristol.
My working life has been varied. From teaching in junior and nursery schools, to admin work at Bristol University and more recently as a Broadcast Assistant at BBC Radio Bristol. For a hobby I joined the Bristol Hospital Broadcasting Service and produced and presented a couple of regular programmes. These included request shows and a programme of music and poetry called ‘The Runcible Spoon’.
While at Radio Bristol I worked on many programmes both producing and presenting. You can’t beat the ‘buzz’ of working in live radio! Since then I’ve officially retired, but have had a series of interesting part-time jobs, including working for Children in Need and my present one working in the Student Village at UWE.
I do hope you enjoy my literary hour, which does include music, now called ‘The Runcible Spoon’ (Tue 11.00 am). This broadcast I’m also presenting ‘Roughly Lunchtime’ on Mondays at 12 noon. Please do contact me via - if you put my name in the subject line I’ll be sure to get your mail.
